Roses Are Red. Pepperonis Are Too…

February 9, 2012

Pizza Inn, Pizza Hut, Papa Murphy'sThough most of us associate Valentine’s Day with fancy restaurants and going all out for our loved ones, there are many who plan on staying in and having a relaxing evening on the couch catching up on recorded TV, or the thousands of college students on Ramen noodle budgets, or even the lazy, last-minute planners who give pizza and a back rub while watching basketball. If you fall into one of these categories, don’t worry, you won’t be overlooked. For a lot of quick-serve chains, you are at the top of the list, numero uno, the head customer in charge — especially for pizza chains. A handful of corporate-owned Pizza Inn (my favorite national pizza chain) locations will be offering a FREE buffet with the purchase of a buffet and two drinks to college students and by now, everyone knows that the take-and-bake champion, Papa Murphy’s, will be making their very tasty — and very cool looking — $7 heart-shaped pepperoni pizzas, but there is a pizza giant among us who will outdo them all.

After leading the $10 pizza bandwagon, Pizza Hut has come up with the $10 Dinner Box. This meal of epic proportions includes a medium one-topping rectangular pan pizza, five breadsticks with marinara sauce and 10 cinnamon sticks with a sweet icing cup in one box for only $10. Yeah, they’re crazy, but this is even crazier… From now until Valentine’s Day, Pizza Hut is offering 10 exclusive packages, titled The $10 Dinner Box Proposal Package, including a ruby engagement ring, limo service, flowers, fireworks show, photographer, videographer and of course, the $10 Dinner Box at a cost of $10,010 each. Pizza Hut is completely out of their minds, but they got my attention. I’m thinking of renewing my vows just to get one of these packages (not really).

Pizza Hut $10 Dinner Box Proposal PackageKurt Kane, Pizza Hut CMO, says, “If we’re able to fit pizza, breadsticks and dessert into one box for only $10, why stop there? Our customers want the best of everything, from their food to memorable life experiences. So we decided to make one of those experiences — the marriage proposal — second-to-none and offer it at right alongside the new $10 Dinner Box.”

So, if you’re interested, you have until February 14, 2012 to take Pizza Hut up on their offer. Here are the details:

  • Ruby Engagement Ring: a diamond-encrusted ruby token of your affection
  • Limo Service: round-trip (I believe) transportation to and from your memorable experience
  • Flowers: not just roses, but a spectacular bouquet of her favorite flowers
  • Fireworks: a perfectly-timed fireworks display that will make all of your friends jealous
  • Photographer: photos before, during and after
  • Videographer: she or he better say “yes”
  • $10 Dinner Box: eat first so it doesn’t get cold

That’s one out-of-this-world package. The only thing that comes close is the $55,000 Sparkling Red Velvet Cupcake from the Philadelphia-based Cupcake Gourmet. The cupcake isn’t as filling as pizza, but their ring is better — an 8-carat diamond ring.

I wonder if anyone went through with it? Pizza Hut definitely has the kitsch factor, but this offering probably won’t benefit them in the run–it makes people grin for a minute and then just seems ridiculous. Scale it down and offer something that beats heart-shaped pizzas (however adorable they may be) but still grabs the attention of people on a budget… Maybe the delivery person could dress up as Cupid? Ok, maybe not 🙂

Katie, I like the way you think; however, I can’t see anyone stepping up to dress like Cupid. I will check with Pizza Hut to see if anyone redeemed this offer.

I contacted one of the Marketing Director at Pizza Hut to ask about the Proposal Package and to my surprise, he said that someone did purchase it. They must be crazy in love.
