Taco Bell and Doritos: The Perfect Collaboration.

February 20, 2013

Doritos-Locos-TacosWhen two awesome things come together to make one awesomer thing, it’s pretty awesome. This is what is referred to as a collaboration. When executed successfully, it becomes one of the greatest, most talked about phenomenons. For example, man and woman coming together to become husband and wife as one is possibly the awesomest thing God created — even more so than french fries. God created french fries. Collaborations are extremely common in the music industry. VH1 recently released The 9 Most Unexpectedly Delightful Musical Collaborations of 2012. Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars should have been number 1.

Collaborations have become even more popular in other industries. Let’s take clothing for example. Rocawear, launched by superstar icon Jay-Z, collaborated with Reebok to create the S. Carter Collection of shoes. The popular surfwear manufacturer Stüssy has collaborated with Nike on multiple occasions creating some pretty nice sneakers as well. In the restaurant industry, Taco Bell and Doritos, once under the same corporate umbrella within PepsiCo, has collaborated on what is now Taco Bell’s most popular menu item ever, Doritos Locos Tacos.

In just 10 weeks after the launch last March, the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos became the highest selling menu item with a whopping 100 million sold. Approximately one year later, this tasty concoction of Doritos, meat, lettuce and cheese (supreme includes sour cream and tomatoes) has sales of over 350 million units. And in just a few weeks Taco Bell will repeat success with the all new Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. Although this version was originally supposed to launch last year, the wait and hype will most certainly serve Taco Bell well. As a matter of fact, the quick-serve giant is testing out another Doritos Locos Tacos based on Doritos’ chile-lime flavored Flamas chips. This isn’t Taco Bell’s first time playing with taco shells. Back in September 2008, they launched the Volcano Taco, prepared with its signature red shell and filled with ground beef, lettuce and Lava Sauce. It was so successful that Taco Bell launched a Volcano Menu that also included the Volcano Double Beef Burrito. I’m sure there are people out there who feel that it’s not cool or creative to keep on doing the same thing over and over again, but as my momma always said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
